Tree of Life Art

The tree of life is a powerful symbol of growth‚ as the tree is the only living thing that continues to grow throughout its lifetime. In Judaism Etz Hayim‚ The Tree of life is traditionally associated with the Torah. Proverbs 3:18 says; It is a Tree of Life to those who cleave to it; proclaiming that the Torah is a Tree of Life‚ Etz Hayim‚ to all who hold fast to it. The tree of life also represents each and all individual human being as it strives to develop and strengthen in the same way that we branch out to wider visions as we grow. In Kaballah the tree of life is a mystical symbol used to understand the nature of G-d and the way in which He created us and the world. The Tree of Life was one of the two primary trees in the Garden of Eden. This tree stands for the roots of all human understanding thus understanding the Tree of Life means understanding the epitome of existence. The Etz Chayim‚ tree of life verse is sung in Synagogue as the Torah is placed back into the Ark. Usually the tree of life symbol shows a tree with roots in the earth and branches that are interwoven with each other and reach to the sky. The original tree of life is mentioned in Genesis 2:9; And out of the ground G-d made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight‚ and good for food; and the tree of life‚ in the midst of the garden‚ and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Genesis 2:9. Over generations Jewish artists were inspired by this metaphor and integrated the tree of life into their art work. Usually the tree of life symbol shows a tree with roots in the earth and branches that are interwoven with each other and reach to the sky. The image of the Tree of Life‚ both as a symbol of Torah as well as of immortality in the World to Come‚ has long been a favorite decorative motif in synagogues.
